Online Therapy in California
I see clients located anywhere in California by video. A telehealth session is the same 50 minutes and the same work as a session in my Hayes Valley office. The difference is that you do not have to be in San Francisco.
I am Stephen Gundlach, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. My work is with people leaving or questioning high-control religion, with men, with LGBTQ+ adults, and with couples.
Who this is for
For many of the people I work with, video is the only practical way to see a therapist who knows their situation:
- People in parts of California where a therapist who understands religious trauma or cult recovery is hard to find, including the Central Valley, the Inland Empire, the Sacramento suburbs, Orange County, and the far north of the state
- LGBTQ+ adults outside the coastal cities who want an affirming therapist.
- Men whose schedule does not fit a midday drive to an office
- Couples who cannot get to the same place at the same time
How video sessions work
We meet on Zoom. You get a link before each session. You need a private room, a laptop or phone with a camera, and a connection that can hold a video call. I do the same things on video that I do in the room.
Sessions are 50 minutes. Most people start weekly. Some clients alternate between video sessions and in-person sessions in Hayes Valley.
Fees
Sessions are $200 for 50 minutes, the same as in person. I am out of network with insurance but can provide a superbill for reimbursement. Whether your plan reimburses telehealth the same way it reimburses office visits depends on the plan; the benefits check on my fees page will tell you. I reserve a limited number of sliding scale slots.

No, you can be anywhere in California.
What if I have never done therapy by video?
We spend the first moments making sure we can see and hear each other.
What happens if the connection drops?
Call or text me at 415-754-9172 and we will sort it out.
Can I switch between video and in person?
Yes. Many clients do both.
